Why I Built Hanok

"Work and private life blur easily. I wanted to fix that."

As a software engineer, I was given a company laptop. Like any responsible company, it came with security software that could monitor almost everything: location, files, and apps.

We're behind our work computers almost all the time now. It’s easy to slip in something personal: check WhatsApp, reply to private email, or contact your doctor. But as soon as you connect your phone to your work laptop, your private files may become accessible. Not ideal.

I looked for a better way. I wanted something specific: no AI, no tracking, no hidden processes or ads. That ruled out Windows and macOS quickly. Niche enterprise solutions were too expensive or stored data in questionable locations.

So I built it myself. Hanok is a clean, private desktop that keeps your data secure. I named it after traditional Korean houses—combining simplicity with a sense of "home" in your digital life.

What happens to my desktop when my subscription ends?

If a free trial ends before you have paid, your cloud desktop and files are kept for up to 7 days. After a paid subscription ends, they are kept for up to 30 days. After that, they are permanently deleted and cannot be recovered.

How can I access Hanok?

Open Hanok directly in your browser. No special software is required.

What about speed or connectivity issues?

Cloud desktops used to feel laggy on a slow connection. Hanok is built to stay usable even then. Losing the connection is rarely a problem in practice.

What's up with the name Hanok?

A Hanok is a traditional Korean home. It was envisioned as your 'home away from home'—a friendly, accessible, and clean digital space. Rik, the founder, wanted a name that reflected simplicity and his love for South Korea and Japan.

It seems like a really good deal! What gives?

Who is behind Hanok?

Hanok is the brainchild of Rik van der Kemp, a full-stack developer and Linux lover. He built it for himself when he couldn't find a user-friendly, private cloud desktop that wasn't aimed solely at giant corporations.
